Daily Something #18: Stick Man

I have always been fascinated with the concept of stick people and how it is that at a very early age, we use them in our drawings.  So much of what we see is defined by lines, whether they are straight, curvy, bent, or zig-zagged.  Here is something fun to try if you have a few moments to be creative.

Daily Something #10: Spider Orchids and a Painting

I was flipping through some old National Geographic magazines and came across an article that I had bookmarked about spider orchids.  If you don't know anything about them, spider orchids are quite an interesting species of flowers.  Anyway,  I ended up using one of the images as an inspiration for a painting.

Here are two pictures I recently took of a dragonfly statue.  I like how she portrays a sense of movement in her stillness.  She is a perfect mixture of delicacy and strength.

Picasso's Woman in a Dream

Picasso's Woman in a Dream is a painting of mine inspired by Picasso's Blue Nude. When I painted her, I was thinking about how we sometimes hold on to things, both good and bad.  It is often difficult to let go of past mistakes and continue doing what we truly feel we were meant to do.  Sometimes we even question who and where we are.  I painted Picasso's woman under a tree so that she may have roots and be connected to one specific place.  The movement from cool to warm colors represents release, in whatever form that may be.

The connection between art and nature, color and form, light and imagination - Chihuly at Cheekwood.  It was like walking inside of a painting.

Chihuly's Fiori Di Como, a 70 X 30 feet art installation in the lobby of the Bellagio Hotel has around 2000 hand-blown glass flowers.  When I first walked into the lobby of the hotel and looked up at the ceiling, I was mesmerized by all the color and the overwhelming feeling of being captured in the midst of a masterpiece.  The detail and delicacy of each bloom contributes to the beauty of this stunning work of art, and as I stood underneath it, I was utterly captivated.  It's no wonder Chihuly is known as one of the best glass sculptors of our time.
